This is the view from Google Earth where an IPOD is being advertised giant size. This advertisement took 2 years to complete. This is far beyond the gimmick that Rolling Rock pulled off via some well placed billboards and commercial spots claiming that they will be advertising on the moon (moonvertising.com). Just in case you still think that moonvertising is real: Amnesiablog’s post debunking the whole thing.

This publicity stunt seems to have been an April Fool’s joke that was originally fabricated back on April 1st 2006 on the blog boakes.org. Despite that fact, it is visible on Google Earth, and it has been listed on Trendhunter’s Top 15 Google Earth Innovations and Games. Guess Trendhunter.com needs to do some better fact checking next time.

According to the original post from April 1st, 2006:

The sheer size of the publicity stunt is difficult to comprehend. It covers 893240 square metres; roughly equivalent to eighty football pitches.

The ad, which depicts Apple’s flagship iPod product has been constructed on the site of an abandoned mineral mine in remote western Australia. It has been in development for almost two years since Apple’s founder Steve Jobs acquired the location during a game of poker with (the late) Australian publishing and gaming tycoon Kerry Packer.

So there you have it. This IPOD ad should die once and for all. But it is going to exist until Google Earth admins take it down, so maybe it will be around for a while longer. What do you think?
